Ronettes : Be My Baby

MCMLXIII

A gem excavated from YouTube – an inventively realised composite of three (?) performances of this iconic track by The Ronettes – one of the earliest (1963) and best examples of the seminal, and never surpassed, Phil Spector ‘Wall of Sound’.
The girls’ confident, effortless poise and natural grace is captivating and rare, and Ronnie is…. well, just goddam gorgeous  !  ( Unfortunately Phil thought so too; married her and proceeded to make her life a misery for the next few years with his paranoia and insane jealousy. Ronnie wrote about the experience in her autobiography, ”Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness” – surely one of the all-time great book-titles )….

None of which detracts from the brilliance of this luminous relic of an age of (relative) innocence.
