Roy Orbison : In Dreams

The magical voice of Roy Orbison, and a dreamlike, surreal video with scenes from David Lynch’s 1986 film ‘Blue Velvet’.

This great song has a unique structure, with seven discrete musical movements in which Orbison sings through two octaves.

And ”I remember that you said Goodbye’‘ must be one of the saddest lines in any sad song….

The Walker Brothers : The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore

The eccentric Scott Walker has died aged 76.

He rejected the fame which came from the handful of very great singles he made with the Walker Brothers in the sixties and seventies to become an avant-garde recluse, occasionally releasing profoundly weird, and totally uncommercial albums like ”Tilt’‘ with its nightmarish walls of sound, elliptical lyrics and obscure cultural references. A very interesting and quite unique artist. RIP.

In Paradisum : Gabriel Fauré

In paradisum deducant te Angeli:
in tuo adventu suscipiant te Martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Jerusalem.

Chorus Angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere
æternam habeas requiem,
æternam habeas requiem.

“May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your arrival and lead you to the holy city Jerusalem. May choirs of angels receive you and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.”

Gabriel Faure’s Requiem  Op. 48 Complete :

To :   John-Michael Goodburn Fisher : 1988-2016

Jimi Hendrix : The Star-Spangled Banner

It would be worthwhile for the British to finally ditch their absurd, anachronistic and parasitical monarchy, if only to acquire a decent new National Anthem to replace the present dreadful dirge ‘God Save the Queen’ with its abject, servile lyrics.

The French, Russian and Italian anthems all have great tunes, – (and Peru’s is a belter !)

Even the USA anthem  (Jimi Hendrix version, naturally) cuts it…
